True Story, Shel Silverstein, David Hubbard

True Story
Shel Silverstein

This morning I jumped on my horse and went out for a ride.
Some wild outlaws chased me and they shot me in the side.
So I crawled into a wildcat's cave to find a place to hide,
But some pirates found me a'sleepin' there and soon they had me tied
'Till a lady zombie cut me loose and begged to be my bride.
So I said I'd come back Wednesday, but I must admit I lied,
'Cause I run away into the swamp but I forgot my guide.
And I stepped into some quicksand, and no matter how I tried,
I couldn't get out 'till I met a crocodile named Clyde
Who took me to some cannibals who planned to have me fried.
They built a fire under me and I swear I almost cried
'Till an eagle come and swooped me up and through the air we flied,
But he dropped me in a boiling lake a thousand miles wide.
And you know what happened then?
I died...

Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks The National, David Hubbard

Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks  The National
Leave your home
Change your name
Live alone
Eat your cake

Vanderlyle, crybaby, cry
Oh, the waters are rising
Still no surprising you
Vanderlyle, crybaby, cry

Man, it's all been forgiving
Swans are a swimming
I'll explain everything to the geeks

All the very best of us
String ourselves up for love
All the very best of us
String ourselves up for love

All the very best of us
String ourselves up for love
All the very best of us
String ourselves up for love

Vanderlyle, crybaby, cry
Oh, the waters are rising
Still no surprising you
Vanderlyle, crybaby, cry

Man, it's all been forgiving
Swans are a swimming
I'll explain everything to the geeks

Hanging from chandeliers
Same small world
At your heels

All the very best of us
String ourselves up for love
All the very best of us
String ourselves up for love

All the very best of us
String ourselves up for love
All the very best of us
String ourselves up for love

Vanderlyle, crybaby, cry
Oh, the waters are rising
Still no surprising you
Vanderlyle, crybaby, cry

Man, it's all been forgiving
Swans are a swimming
I'll explain everything to the geeks

I'll explain everything to the geeks
I'll explain everything to the geeks

Tom Ames Prayer, Craig, Hayden And Elise

Tom Ames Prayer, Steve Earle

Everyone in Nacadoches knew Tom Ames would come to some bad end
Well the sheriff had cought him stealin' chickens and such
by the time that he was ten
And one day his daddy took a ten dollar bill
and he tucked it in his hand
He said I can tell you're headed for trouble son
and your momma wouldn't understand

So he took that money and his brothers old bay
and he left without a word of thanks
Fell in with a crowd in some border town
and took to robbin' banks

Outside the law your luck will run out fast
and a few years came and went
'Till he's trapped in an alley in Abilene
with all but four shells spent

And he realized prayin' was the only thing
that he hadn't ever tried
Well he wasn't sure he knew quite how
but he looked up to the sky

Said you don't owe me nothin' and as far as I know
Lord don't owe nothin' to you
And I ain't askin' for a miracle Lord
just a little bit of luck will do

And you know I ain't never prayed before
but it always seemed to me
If prayin' is the same as beggin' Lord
I don't take no charity

Yeah but right now Lord with my back to the wall
Can't help but recall
How they nearly hung me for stealin' a horse
in Fort Smith Arkansas

Judge Parker said guilty and the gavel came down
just like a cannon shot
And I went away quietly
and I began to file and plot

Well they sent the preacher down to my cell
He said the Lord is your only hope
He's the only friend that you gonna have
When you hit the end of Parker's rope

Well I guess he coulda' kept on preachin' 'till Christmas
but he turned his back on me
I put a home made blade to that golden throat
and asked the deputy for the key

Well it ain't the first close call I ever had
I'm sure you already know
I had some help from you Lord and the devil himself
It's been strictly touch and go

Yeah but who in the hell am I talkin' to
there ain't no one here but me
Then he cocked both his pistols and he spit in the dirt
and he walked out in the street

The Fox, Traditional, By David Hubbard

"The Fox"

The Fox went out on a chilly night
He prayed for the moon to give him light
For he had many a mile to go that night
Before he reached the town-o, town-o, town-o
He had many a mile to go that night
Before he reached the town-o

He ran till he came to a great big pen
The ducks and the geese were kept therein
He said a couple of you are gonna grease my chin
Before I leave this town-o, town-o, town-o
A couple of you are gonna grease my chin
Before I leave this town-o

He grabbed the great goose by the neck
He threw a duck across his back
And he didn't mind the quack, quack quack
And the legs all danglin' down-o, down-o, down-o
He didn't mind the quack, quack quack
And the legs all danglin' down-o

Old mother Pitter Patter  jumped out of bed
Out of the window she popped her head
Cryin' John, John the great goose is gone
The Fox is on the town-o, town-o, town-o
John, John the great goose is gone
And the Fox is on the town-o

Well John he ran to the top of the hill
Blew his horn both loud and shrill
The fox he said better flee with my kill
They’ll soon be on my trailo, trailo, trailo
The fox he said better flee with my kill
They’ll soon be on my trailo

He ran till he came to his cozy den
And there were the little ones 8, 9, 10
Sayin' Daddy, Daddy better go back again
It must be a mighty fine town-o, town-o, town-o
Daddy, Daddy go back again
For it must be a mighty fine town-o

The Fox and his Wife, without any strife
They cut up the goose with a fork and a knife
And they never had such a supper in their life
And the little ones chewed on the bones-o, bones-o, bones-o

They never had such a supper in their life
And the little ones chewed on the bones-o

Temporary Glances, Original By Craig Hubbard….

Temporary Glances, Original By Craig Hubbard…..
I said I want you, you said I scare you
You said I love you,  I said I hear you
Please don’t fear to take more chances
It’s only temporary glances

Through the water, into the rain
The city calls out through the pain
We don’t perceive all the advances
With only temporary glances
With vision blurring I take your hand.
You lead me through what we planned.

She lays me down and then she dances
But it’s temporary glances

Lay me down now in the meadow
In the sunshine through the wind blow
No more books and strange romances
Because of temporary glances

Just The Other Side Of Nowhere, Kris Kristofferson, David Hubbard

Just The Other Side Of Nowhere,
Kris Kristofferson, By David Hubbard

I've come from just the other side of no-where,
To this big time lonesome town.
They got a lotta ice an' snow here,
Half as cold as all the people I've found.
Every way I try to go here,
Seems to bring me down.
I seen about enough to know where I belong.

I've got a mind to see the headlights shinin',
On that old white line between my heart and home.
Sick of spendin' Sundays, wishin' they were Mondays,
Sittin' in a park alone.
So give my best to anyone who's left who ever done me,
Any lovin' way but wrong,
Tell them that the pride of just the other side of nowhere's goin' home.

Takin' nothing back to show there,
For these dues I have paid,
But the soul I almost sold here,
And the body I've been givin' away.
Fadin' from the neon nightime glow here,
Headin' for the light of day.
Just the other side of nowhere, goin' home.

I've got a mind to see the headlights shinin',
On that old white line between my heart and home.
Sick of spendin' Sundays, wishin' they were Mondays,
Sittin' in a park alone.
So give my best to anyone who's left who ever done me,
Any lovin' way but wrong,
Tell 'em that the pride of just the other side of nowhere's goin' home.

Takin' nothing back to show there,
For these dues I have paid,
But the soul I almost sold here,
And the body I've been givin away.
Fadin' from the neon nightime glow here,
Headin' for the light of day.
Just the other side of nowhere, goin' home.

Just the other side of no-where, goin' home.
